Advocating for Self-Determination: The United Liberation Movement for West Papua

The United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) is a coalition of West Papuan organizations formed in 2014 with the goal of seeking self-determination and independence for the West Papua region, which is currently part of the Indonesian archipelago. The ULMWP aims to bring together the various separatist movements and organizations within West Papua to work towards a unified and peaceful struggle for independence.

West Papua has a long history of resistance to Indonesian rule, dating back to the 1960s, when Indonesia claimed the territory as part of its national territory. Since then, there have been ongoing human rights abuses, including widespread violence and suppression of political dissent. The ULMWP seeks to address these issues by advocating for the rights of the West Papuan people and working towards the ultimate goal of independence.

The ULMWP has been recognized by the Melanesian Spearhead Group, a regional intergovernmental organization, as the sole representative of the West Papuan people. This recognition has given the ULMWP a platform to raise awareness about the situation in West Papua and to bring attention to the struggle for independence. However, the Indonesian government does not recognize the ULMWP and continues to view the region as an integral part of the Indonesian state.
